Ding Ding! Lil Kim has left nobody in doubt that she hates Nicki Minaj in her latest video Black Friday. For those of you that haven’t seen the offending video, here it is:
So where does this hatred come from? Well the video clearly seems to indicate Lil Kim thinks Nicki is trying to copy her style. OK, we’ll just raise an eyebrow to that one, but let’s have a look at how the war of words started:
June 2010: At a concert in New York, Lil Kim makes remarks that Nicki likes neon wigs, just like those she wore in 1997′s “Crush on You”. A little later she was joined at another concert by Ray J, who said to the crowd: “It’s a lot of people biting her style and shit…I ain’t saying no names — but you know who.” This prompted Kim to say “We just want them to pay homage, so we can all rock together. It’s about respect: You respect me, I respect you. If you don’t respect me, then f*** you.”
So first blood to the older lady, but it was still tame by comparison to how it is now. It took Nicki Minaj some time to come out and dignify these comments with a response. She was forced to finally after it seemed almost impossible for her to get away from them in interviews. The rest of 2010 saw a war of words between the two, usually with Nicki on the defensive.
Things seemed to die down a bit in recent months resulting in Lil Kim basically getting no press attention, unlike her rival who was able to stay in the limelight because of her music. So what did Kim do? Release this video.
So how exactly is there a copying of style going on? Because both are black women and rap? Well, that would leave thousands of people as imitators too and it was certainly nothing that Lil Kim invented. The real accusation that’s being laid at Miss Minaj is that she is wearing neon wigs, which of course makes her a direct comparison (cough) . Well perhaps Elton John would have something to say about Lil Kim making wigs a trademark style, or perhaps Rihanna’s new colourful hair is now causing a bit of offence too.
If you don’t want to get on the wrong side of this self appointed Queen of music, then you can’t be a black lady rapper and wear a wig. Never mind the fact that Nicki has much more of a pop edge and is making some of the most catchy tunes at the moment that seem to build a bridge between genres in a way we’ve never quite seen before. Never mind she can do much more than just churn out aggressive raps, being lyrical yet melodic. She wears wigs and that’s enough for her haters.
There’s really nothing that has been pinned on Minaj musically to say she is stealing ideas. This is the most blatant, and pathetic attempt to stay relevant we have seen. If you put an artist’s severed head on the front cover of your release, then we all know you’re just trying to piggy back on that artists success. When Eminem used to insult other artists we used to like it because it was funny. This hasn’t even been witty. It was an interesting row for a while, but now we’d rather just get back to the Minaj party now please.

Hi ChicagoFabulous, great post but I think there is a huge gaping hole in your story. “Beef” as rappers would call it, is part of the hip hop game. While Kim was genuine and bitter in her accusations, she probably had no idea she was feeding into the press plan for Minaj. Nicki staying quiet, while Kim spews about this newbee making her rival more popular. Nicki’s people are brilliant. I use to dress Nicki BEFORE SHE CROSSED OVER INTO FASHION VICTIM and yes, she is talented, but her “rap” style is a little bit of this and a little bit of that. If Missy Elliot and Lil Kim were to have a love child it would be named… tah dah -Nicki Minaj! LOL!!! I get Kim’s upset… but next time she should keep her mouth shut and put it in her music. I have to commend you for speaking the truth. kim is just a very bitter old woman that does not behave her age. if not from the wig there is no comparism between the two and she hates to see a fellow black woman MC doing good. she was not offended at Nicki during her underground days but all of a sudden she is because of Nickis success.And she is such an attention seeking moful i have ever seen in my life.Nicki is on a different level known all over the world even to places she has never been.And i have to say that her team are really doing a nice job.KUDOS TO BOTH NICKI AND YMCMB.

Get out of here with this one-sided opinion of the whole ordeal. I’m not a big fan of either, but its clear as day that Nikki is NO ONE’S original artist. Did you see how switch the girl’s style switched up once she became mainstream? She’s def a puppet. This article just hit the nail on the head. So What Nicki stole Lil’ Kims whole style and ran with it. Not to mention that she has songs dissing Kim before she got in the industy. Fendi is about to reveal that Nicki and Kim are closer in age than we have been lead to believe.But you are right.Lil Kim is very very old. Soon she will walking with a cane and getting grey hair. The first time I heard Nicki M was a song my niece was watching the video to. As soon as I saw and heard her style I thought, “Lil Kim.” She was clearly influenced by Lil Kim–is it really so bad to admit it? Lil Kim has always played well with other female rappers (Ladies Night: Missy, Left Eye, Brat, etc.) Nicki and Diddy (who probaly had a lot of influence on N.M’s style) should send out a friendly shout…before you know it they’d be rocking out together.

I just dont get why people think Kim was the first female rapper out there? She didnt break down any doors but to teach your moms that its ok to be a slut and be proud of it! What about MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, JJ Fad, Angie B, Salt and Pepper? Lil Kim doesnt make smart moves and she’s digging her own grave in the music industry. And to be quite fankly, she’s already half way there. Theres a new era/new generation of music and alot of fresh new talents and if you cant beat them you might as well join them.
