Why would Mel B be good a good replacement for Cheryl Cole on the X Factor? Because she can’t keep her mouth shut and usually what she blurts out is entertaining – and it is ironically in this manner that she has hinted she will be on the next X Factor.
Speaking on Jamie Theakston’s radio show (yes, it really is like going back to the late 90s as Theakston and Scary Spice rule the daily showbiz gossip) she said, when asked about her home city of Leeds:
“‘Funny you should say that, I think I might be coming over for quite some time at some point next year”, before backtracking with nervous giggles and continuing “I don’t think I was meant to say that though. Oh sorry, pregnant brain, maybe that was a secret.”
Theakston is a still a savvy presenter though and pressed her on whether she would be replacing Cheryl on the UK version of The X Factor. Here’s her response:
“Maybe so… anyway… I’m in so much trouble, why did I do this interview? I don’t talk about anything unless it’s ready to go.”
Whoa! But what about Cheryl’s Geordie twang – surely the narrative goes along the lines that the US audience can’t understand her (despite the voice training she is having) so she’ll have to come back to Blighty and retake her judging position here. Well, not so according to Mel:
‘Well, I’ve got an accent and everyone can understand me, I think she’s great,’
There’s nothing concrete here, as you would expect. Simon Cowell though has been more than happy to have ex Spice Girls on his panel, having had Geri in to judge in a guest spot last year.
This though has only served to convince us more that Simon will be picking Cheryl for the US version. He wouldn’t get rid of Louis – remember what happened last time (in that oh so non-staged “let’s get rid of Louis” PR stunt). Dannii Minogue also became the most popular judge last year – after we heard more and more people coming over to Team Minogue we ran this poll to prove it. At the same time we can’t see there being room for both Mel and Cheryl and this interview seems to suggest she’d be a replacement for her.
So what does this mean for Miss Cole? Well she is genuine friends with Simon, and if he were to keep her hanging about in the states with the world’s media glare fixed firmly on her only to let her down, that would be fairly cruel. All this talk of execs disagreeing with him over Cheryl is a bit rich too. He broke away from the “Idol” series to do the X Factor because he could basically control it (and its profit) rather than having to answer to execs and of course Simon Fuller. The more the speculation goes on, the more secure Cheryl’s place becomes.
We’re sad to see her go, but Mel B would spice it up a bit (no pun intended) both with direct northern comments on the show, and big gaffs about her true feelings in interviews.
