So last year Lena walked away with Eurovision by quite some margin. Not quite as much as Alexander Rybak (we’re still trying to get that song out of our head), but she was fairly comfortable in her win. “Satellite” was a great pop song. It was catchy, had a bouncy beat and didn’t make complete sense – perfect Eurovision fodder. So can Lena do it again with “Taken by a Stranger” in 2011? Here’s the song:
Well our first thought was its not a good idea to enter the same artist again – not least Lena. After her performance last year came the interview – and there were more than a few comments on Twitter asking for their votes back. She was a teenager about to win Eurovision…so it’s understandable she was over excited. Excited teenagers are quite annoying though. At the very least the interview means the mystery that you have in most countries as a Eurovision contestant is gone in this case – people can’t just project the personality they imagine onto Lena and vote accordingly. An amazing song is needed then.
And to be fair – this is a great song. It’s probably not Eurovision material though. I spent a lot of song waiting for it to kick in to a cascading chorus, which never came. It left me a bit frustrated, like missing a sneeze. Seeing it without Eurovision goggles I’d really like it. In the context of the comp though we reckon “Taken by a Stranger” will do well, but won’t win.
Germany also doesn’t have a standard base that will vote for it (in the same way as say the Eastern bloc countries do), so it needs to overcome this disadvantage. They’re not going to get any underdog votes, being the incumbent winners – and her quirky almost cockney voice might seem a bit more tired this time.
Thumbs up to the song, down to its chances.

It’s true Germany got only a small standard base with German speaking countries like Austria and Switzerland. But Lena as a singer now got a fan-base in many European countries which may bring some extra points. E.g. she is still pretty popular in last years host Norway and together wit the fact one of the composers is Norwegian this could be enough to secure her 12 points from there.

From the beginning of Grand Prix Austria never gave points to Germany.
Maybe Lena´ll get many points or not – I don´t know at all. Never mind, it´s only a song. But I suppose her performance will be great.
I like to see a country win that never did it before.
The people who live at river Rhine are very jovial and cheerful, let us celebrate a happy festival together!
