Lady Gaga 60 Minutes

Lady Gaga on 60 Minutes

Lady Gaga had been shying away from interviews in the late part of last year, but now it seems as though she’s got over it and it’s nice to see her more striped back than on stage and get to find out what she’s thinking behind the costumes, massive eggs and pantomine.

This one seemed more candid than usual too as she spoke about her difficult rise to fame (for those of you who think she’s manufactured by execs you couldn’t be more wrong – she’s done it the traditional way). Here’s the clip:

For us the most interesting bit was her comments on her creative process – probably because its the most sensational:

“I smoke a lot of pot when I write music. So I’m not gonna like, sugar coat it for ’60 Minutes’ that I am some like, sober human being cause I’m not. I drink a lot of whiskey and I smoke weed when I write…I don’t do it a lot, because it’s not good for my voice. I don’t want to encourage kids to do drugs, but when you asked me about the sociology of fame and what artists do wrong — What artists do wrong is they lie, and I don’t lie. I’m not a liar. I built good will with my fans. They know who I am and I’m just like them in so many ways.”

There’s an extra thing of note about this though…Lady Gaga was keen to forestall any criticism about her being a bad role model for kids, as anyone would no doubt expect this kind of comment to come in for a lot of flak. However, in comparison to previous such revelations about previous artists the reaction seems muted. If you’re going to have it publicly displayed that you smoke weed, or anything else, then Lady Gaga has set the template. Number one, do it yourself. Number two, make sure you explain you don’t want to mislead children. Number three, be so outrageous in a strange way for the year before the announcement that everyone is so confused and nobody is quite sure what their opinion of you is anyway.
