While everyone goes crazy over the Girls Aloud possible reunion, I’m afraid I’m going to have to poor some cold water over it. While we’d love to see the girls putting out a new album of their trademark catchy pop (with nonsensical lyrics), it seems much more likely that it will just be a few concerts to mark their tenth anniversary. Before we go any further though, let’s remind ourselves of what was going on ten years ago:
Davina McCall seems to have actually got younger as the years go on. The important bit for them to celebrate though is that it’s ten years since Javine didn’t get into the band. If she had, we reckon they would have lasted only two years and there would have been a lot more hard feeling between the members.
So as for the reunion, here’s what an insider told Heat – “The girls are very keen to reunite and start working on another album. Their main love is the band and they all feel ready to get back and start recording. But Cheryl can’t commit to that right now.”
It looked then like we would have the band back with new material, just sans Cheryl. However, their manager has come out and made the situation seem very different. Hilary Shaw said:
“Everybody wants them to make a comeback and it will be next year…Well, it is their 10th anniversary so there will be something.”
She was also at pains to point out they were still all the best of friends:
“The girls are still getting on great, they speak all the time, and that includes Cheryl and Nadine with the other girls. Cheryl is keen to get back with the girls and is planning something which could be a one-off or some gigs.”
We refer to our Javine comment above
We think we’d rather have the previous situation to be perfectly honest. A foursome girls aloud still producing new tracks is better than a fivesome just doing a few one off concerts. If Take That can manage without Robbie, the spice girls without Geri Halliwell and Westlife without (cough) Brian McFadden then we’re sure the girls could put something good together without Cheryl.
It will all really hang on whether Cheryl lands the American X Factor role – which has become a saga so drawn out and now boring that we can’t even be arsed to speculate on whether she will or won’t.
Kimberley is also supposed to have landed the role of Xtra Factor presenter for the UK version, replacing Konnie Huq. While this is a boon for her, it does make us feel a little bit sad inside. She was by far our favourite member. When she makes comments like this when speaking about Diana Vickers – “I think people will like her, she’s very…[thinks for a second]….likeable” – we’re not really sure how she couldn’t be your top pick of the girls. However, she’s left to fight it out for a position on the sister show of the UK version while Chezza battles for a top spot on the US version. We’re happy for her, but at the same time sad.
