Who could make the Rebecca Black legend happen? Only either a genius or someone so lacking in self awareness that they could come straight out of a Christopher Guest film. Well, here’s a very strange interview with Patrice Wilson, the founder of Ark Music Factory and the person Rebecca Black’s parents gave $2,000 dollars to for the production of “Friday”. It makes it crystal clear that we’re dealing with a hip hop David Brent character rather than a business mogul:
Now that was hard hitting…right from the first question “Everyone wants to know, who are you?”. Apart from from the comic banality of the content of the questions the lady is asking, she has an intonation that belays just how scripted the whole thing is – a fitting reflection on Ark itself. We especially like the camera cuts back to her showing her deeply thinking about the responses given to the question as though this were Frost/Nixon.
Another great bit is where he admits to using autotune, but much less than other artists out there. Patrice would do well to remember that we have ears.
The video makes clear to us that Ark is the music equivalent of those fake fashion agents that charge teenage girls hundreds of pounds for a portfolio with the promise of big things to come…which rarely emerge. This makes the whole Rebecca Black thing a bit more sad, and for us throws into even sharper focus the abuse she is getting on Twitter. The only consolation is the massive amount of cash she has made from “Friday” and all her activity around it will more than cover her future counselling bills.
