Wow! We just had a great idea for a business, Take a t-shirt for about 50p, add a One Direction logo to it, and flog it on for £16. That’s a great margin. We’ll be rich by Christmas…..oh hang on someone’s done it.
Here’s the stuff they are putting out there in the name of the band:
Also if you like the band so much, why not get a keyring to show it.
And what self respecting fan would be seen without an wristband.
How ironic those wristbands were used for “Make Poverty History”, but now they are being used for the worst type of commercialism.
So what’s the problem with them? Well we’re not having a go at the band themselves here – they seem like a good bunch of young lads. The real problem is with the management behind them.
It’s old hat to bang on about music is too commercial these day, but this really does set a new benchmark in the war between commercial interest and music. Churning out this sort of tat shows how the boys are viewed simply with pound symbols above their heads. These products back up the theory that the boys aren’t really musicians, but just mime artists. That’s a bit of an unfair statement for people make at the outset, but it’s a statement that’s out there and these products just back that up.
What’s more, it shows how they view the fans – you can sell them branded wristbands and key rings before a single right?
Even the Take That mania didn’t come before they had released a single – so far One Direction have only really sung covers.
