Charlotte Church had recently made some comments about the Queen. Talking to Esquire she said:
“I’ve met her about seven times and she never remembers me. When you get close to her you realise she’s an old woman and has no idea what’s going on…I feel really sorry for her. She probably doesn’t want to be wheeled out at every Royal Variety Performance to watch scantily clad dancers and s****y comedians.”
Ha….we like this comment. It’s just honest and is, all be it clumsily, meant to be showing empathy for the Queen. However, it predictably came in for some stick from politicians and other public figures. One MP, Jonathan Evans, blasted her remarks in very strong terms as just being a publicity stunt for her career – seemingly missing the irony that he was commenting on something that isn’t really a genuine political issue but gets him media attention.
Anyway, she’s apologised now. The moral of the story? Don’t say anything about an elderly lady in an inherited position of power and wealth, who represents a hangover from a oppressive regime that has somehow managed to remain a figurehead for the country.
